Why is the PlayStation 4 games consoles not backwards compatible?
Why is the PlayStation 4 games console not backwards compatible?

If there is a good reason preventing PS4 backwards compatibility through software decoders and emulation - I haven’t read about it.

Here' my theory...

1) PS4 game sales would be greatly affected. Given the choice, more people would pick up cheaper versions of a new game in the long run. 30% cheaper game prices potentially means 3 times more sales... This would reflect bad on the PS4 as a 'must have commodity'.

The weekly game sales charts would show 150 thousand sales of call of duty ghosts on PS3 versus 50 thousand PS4. Think about it. The PS3 has got a 7 year head start on its consumer base. Meaning millions more people already own a PS3, compared to the minority who own a PS4.

2) Again, game sales. Lots of gamers will re-buy their favourite games again on the next gen console - because they would have traded or sold their old console to afford a new Playstation. Further influenced by editorial websites (paid to praise... the review says in a nutshell) "the graphics are way better than before." This really does bring in fast sales and easy money, as the game development has been paid for before, it's just a case of porting the software, making new media and repackaging with PS4 branding. The toolkit for studios is probably provided free from Sony to port formats,

3) Who needs to spend £300 + on a game console when you can buy a PS3 with the newest game, in a bundle for £99? Unfortunately the only way to stop this would be to end production of PS3 and not releasing new titles on PS3. Not something Sony could afford to do.

Remember a few years ago? PS3 was reportedly being sold at a loss by Sony. Google "Playstation 3 sales still making a loss". Well now it's a fully paid up cash cow that can be milked for many more years. Notice Fifa 14 was released on PS2 - kerching!

The manufacturing costs come down as tech gets older. Microprocessors, memory and all that inside gets cheaper as new technology evolves, old tech gets cheaper.

1. 2. 3. Money money money.
