Brutal Legend (PS3)

Brutal Legend

Release Date: 16/10/2009

Brutal Legend is a new 3rd person action adventure game from Double Fine productions. You play as Eddie Riggs, "an old school roadie" with a passion for Metal (Voiced by Jack Black). Throughout the game you follow Eddie as he finds himself battling through Glam Rockers and Goth’s in order to bring the origins of metal back to civilisation. A large part of Brutal Legend is free roam where you can travel across the entire 62Km² world collecting various additional content to help complete the game. However Brutal Legend takes on a RTS style of gameplay when triggered throughout the campaign where you still control Eddie but is also in charge of creating units and expanding a base in order to defeat the opponent.

Brutal Legend also has up to 8 player online multiplayer, this is where the RTS gameplay really shows off its potential where the players can play as 3 separate factions on 7 maps in team battles.

One particularly ‘must buy’ note for this game is the voice acting, Brutal legend has got to be one of the funniest games I have every played thanks to Jack Black and his cast including Ozzy Osbourne and Lemmy from Motorhead. As well as the stacks of humour that the characters provide throughout Brutal Legend, there is also a jam packed soundtrack featuring over 100 rock/metal tunes from the 80's, 90's right up to more recent releases such as ‘Dragon Force’ and ‘Marilyn Manson’.

As good as this game is, there are a few drawbacks that need to be pointed out; firstly the Campaign itself is not all that long and could easily be completed in less than a day; Secondly there are a number of repetitive side quests that need to be completed in order to obtain 100% completion and finally the RTS aspects within the Campaign can be tedious due to repetitiveness however the multiplayer is good.

This is a thoroughly enjoyable game that will make you laugh, cry, shout, throw your controller and all to a kick ass soundtrack.  6/10 by Daniel McCaughan
